It’s that time of the year again—"Back to School" season. Recently, our KLC Preschool team has received numerous messages from stressed parents in Johor Bahru:
"On her first day of preschool, she cried so hard my heart broke! I felt so guilty leaving her."
"Every morning he wakes up and says, 'I don't want to go to school.' What should I do?"
Seeing your child in tears is incredibly tough. But rest assured, this behavior is completely normal. In psychology, it’s known as—
Separation Anxiety
For a 3 to 6-year-old child, leaving their parents for a new environment translates to:
"I don't know anyone here, and I'm scared."
It's a natural emotional response that any experienced preschool teacher knows how to gently navigate.
As early childhood educators with over 16 years of experience in Johor Bahru, the KLC Preschool academic team has helped countless families through this transition. Today, we are sharing 4 proven, practical tips straight from our classrooms to help your child overcome their fears!
Expert Advice for Parents
4 Steps to Overcome Drop-off Anxiety
Don't wait until the first day to introduce the idea of school. Familiarizing your child with the environment beforehand significantly reduces fear of the unknown.
Read picture books about going to school or role-play with their toys. Frame "preschool" as an exciting new adventure where they get to make friends and play.
We highly encourage parents to bring their children for a campus tour before enrolling. At our Desa Tebrau flagship center, the moment kids see our massive indoor playground, their defenses drop and they immediately think, "Wow, this place is fun!"
Many parents try to sneak out when the child is distracted to avoid tears. This is a huge mistake—it destroys the child's sense of trust and security!
Create a short, predictable goodbye ritual (a special handshake or a big hug). Tell them, "Mommy will pick you up after lunchtime." Always keep your promise.
During morning drop-offs, our experienced teachers will immediately step in. Using positive reinforcement, they gently take over and swiftly redirect your child’s attention to a fun morning activity.
An anxious child often cannot process complex verbal comforting. In these moments, engaging and fun body language is the best icebreaker.
We are the only preschool in Malaysia that systematically integrates Sign Language into our daily curriculum. When a child is nervous, our teachers use fun hand signs to interact with them. This unique, playful approach quickly breaks down barriers, making the child feel the teacher is "fun" and safe.
When you pick up your child, never ask, "Did anyone bully you today?" This subconsciously triggers negative memories.
Ask positive, open-ended questions like, "What fun game did you play today?" or "Did you make a new friend?"
At pick-up, our teachers proactively share your child’s highlight of the day. Parents can follow up by asking, "Was the 5-Color Nutritious Meal yummy today?" Reinforcing positive school experiences builds a strong anticipation for the next day.
🌟 Why KLC is Different
Why Do Children Settle Faster at KLC?
The Power of the Reggio Emilia Approach
At KLC Preschool, we recognize that every child is unique. Beyond professional settling-in techniques, our curriculum is deeply rooted in the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy. This is the core reason our students quickly shed their anxiety and genuinely fall in love with learning:
The Environment as the "Third Teacher"
Our classrooms are intentionally designed to be inspiring. Filled with open-ended materials and thoughtful layouts, the environment naturally invites children to explore, helping them quickly forget their separation sadness.
Child-Led Project-Based Learning
We say no to rigid, rote-learning methods. At KLC, a child's ideas are listened to, and their interests are expanded into engaging projects. When children feel deeply respected, they develop a strong sense of belonging to the school.
Encouraging the "100 Languages"
The Reggio philosophy believes children have "100 languages" to express themselves. Combined with our exclusive Sign Language program, children confidently communicate not just with words, but through art, movement, and gestures, significantly boosting their inner security.

Common Parent Questions
Preparing for Preschool & Primary School Readiness
Absolutely. KLC provides comprehensive school readiness. Beyond social and emotional development, we build strong academic foundations through our proprietary Master Key Phonics system and a genuine trilingual environment (English, Mandarin, BM). Our graduates transition seamlessly into SJK(C), Kebangsaan, or International schools.
This is very common, so please don't worry. Our teachers are trained to guide children patiently, without forcing them. Furthermore, our daily "5-Color Balanced Nutritious Meals" are visually appealing and naturally encourage children to try new, healthy foods alongside their friends.
For a smoother transition, we do not recommend parents staying in the classroom. A parent's presence often delays the child's ability to build trust with their teachers and establish independence. Trust our educators—we will keep you closely updated. Typically, within 1 to 2 weeks, children adapt and look forward to coming to school!
